The Unexpected Path to Purpose: Finding Inspiration in Every Chap

We all have dreams, those burning desires that ignite a spark within us. But life, as it often does, can take us on unexpected detours. This is my story, a testament to the power of passion, lifelong learning, and the beautiful twists that lead us to our true purpose.

From a young age, I was an avid reader. Shakespeare, with his complex language and witty wordplay, captivated me. While a playful Shakespeare reading contest turned out to be a good-natured prank, it opened a door to a world of literary genius. My childhood was also deeply touched by Helen Keller’s remarkable story. Each book I devoured, filled with her courage and resilience, ended in a torrent of tears – a bittersweet reminder of her passing.

My own dream, fueled by these early inspirations, took shape: an equine center for deaf-blind children. Life, however, had other plans. My path diverged, and disability, a challenge that can strike anyone, became part of my journey. Yet, the core desire to help others remained.

Today, I find myself surrounded by individuals within the disability community, both those with disabilities and their allies. It’s a fulfilling space, where I witness the strength and resilience so many possess. While the horses may have faded from the picture, the essence of my dream – to empower and support – lives on.

And the story doesn’t end there. Recent conversations have reignited a spark. People, filled with passion for autism, neurodiversity, or bridging the gap between the deaf and blind communities, are inspiring me once again. My own journey towards learning ASL signifies a new chapter, a step closer to my purpose.

Every day, with every interaction, every piece of knowledge gained, I move closer to that core desire. It’s not just about my path, but about helping others find theirs. In empowering them, I find my own sense of fulfillment.

This Deaf-Blind Awareness Week, from June 23rd to June 30th, 2024, I celebrate Helen Keller’s enduring inspiration. A spark ignited at ten years old continues to burn brightly at sixty.
