The Holistic ROI of Coaching: Why Burpees Might Matter More Than You Think
Blog content
In the corporate world, we often compartmentalize success metrics into neat professional categories. Last week during ICF International Coaching Federation Week 2025, I participated in a coach training where an interesting perspective on measuring coaching ROI emerged.
Beyond Traditional Metrics
When organizations invest in coaching, they naturally want measurable returns. The facilitators discussed common metrics:
- Talent retention improvements
- Culture assessment scores
- Leadership effectiveness ratings
- Team engagement measurements
- Productivity benchmarks
These quantifiable metrics certainly matter. Starting and ending with structured assessments provides clear before-and-after comparisons that organizations value.
The Burpee Controversy
An interesting moment occurred when one facilitator jokingly suggested “burpees would be a great way to show success” before quickly retracting this statement. She clarified that physical metrics might work for health coaching but seemed inappropriate for executive, leadership, or performance coaching.
As someone who practices across these coaching domains, I firmly disagree with this limitation.
The Whole-Person Approach to ROI
Many clients first arrive at coaching on the verge of burnout—working excessive hours, neglecting personal wellbeing, and feeling “too busy” for self-care. They’ve separated their professional and personal selves, often prioritizing work performance at the expense of overall health.
This compartmentalized approach is precisely what limits sustainable success.
Why Physical Metrics Matter for Executive Performance
When a stressed, overwhelmed executive begins prioritizing physical wellbeing—whether through burpees, yoga, or other self-care practices—it signals a fundamental shift in their approach to work-life integration. This shift manifests in numerous professional benefits:
- Improved focus and decision-making: Regular exercise enhances cognitive function
- Better stress management: Physical activity regulates stress hormones
- Enhanced communication: Well-rested people communicate more effectively
- Fewer sick days: Improved overall health reduces absenteeism
- Increased energy and creativity: Self-care creates sustainable energy for innovation
A Real-World Success Story
I recently coached an executive on the verge of burnout who was facing major anxiety and overwhelm. Partway through our coaching engagement, he began training again in a sport he loved. By the end of our engagement, he was competing at the national championships and no longer dealing with stress, overwhelm, and anxiety because he had learned the tools to maintain balance in his life.
This transformation wasn’t just personal—his professional performance improved dramatically as he applied these same balancing techniques to workplace challenges. His physical metrics became a tangible representation of his overall wellbeing and professional resilience.
Living Your “Just Right” Life
The ultimate coaching success occurs when clients achieve their “Just Right” Life—where professional excellence flows naturally from personal wellbeing rather than competing with it.
When executives incorporate regular burpees or other physical activities into their routines, they aren’t just improving their fitness. They’re demonstrating their commitment to sustainable performance through balanced living.
The Integrated Measurement Approach
Rather than separating physical and professional metrics, successful coaching ROI should embrace both. A comprehensive approach might include:
- Traditional performance indicators
- Physical wellbeing measurements
- Work-life balance assessments
- Stress level evaluations
- Quality of relationships (both professional and personal)
Conclusion
The next time someone suggests that physical metrics like burpees aren’t relevant to executive coaching success, consider challenging this assumption. The whole person—not just their compartmentalized professional self—is what ultimately delivers exceptional results.
When coaching helps clients prioritize their complete wellbeing, the professional metrics that organizations traditionally value will naturally improve as well. The executive who makes time for burpees today will likely be making better decisions, communicating more effectively, and driving stronger results tomorrow.
