Day 10: The LEGO Clock and the Neuroscience of Slowing Down

Blog content

Lego Scene. Christmas Trees, Minifigure holding a clock and a peace flag, another clock in the center of the scene.

Theme: Our pace determines our presence.
Prompt: Slow down one thing today by 20%.

Today’s LEGO Advent Coaching prompt is the Clock — a symbol of pacing, presence, and the way time shapes our nervous system and our experience.

There’s a line from the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young song “Slowpoke” that has always stayed with me:

“When I was faster, I was always behind.”

Isn’t that the truth?

We rush, we push, we speed up in hopes of catching up…
yet somehow, going faster often puts us further behind — in energy, in clarity, in connection.

And this time of year amplifies everything.

More to do.
More expectations.
More rushing.
More pressure to “get it all done.”

But the deeper question is:

Do the people we care about want our presents… or our presence?

And what do we want for ourselves?

The Neuroscience of Pacing and Presence

We are not wired for continuous speed.

Neuroscience tells us that:

  • When we slow down, the nervous system settles.

  • When we rest, integration happens.

  • When we sleep, neurogenesis accelerates — meaning new neural pathways form faster.

Rest isn’t what delays change.
Rest is what creates change.

Presence isn’t a luxury.
It’s a biological requirement for clarity, emotional regulation, and meaningful connection — both to ourselves and to others.

This is why rushing actually makes us less productive, less grounded, and less able to be fully ourselves.

Pacing is not just a time-management strategy.
It is a mental performance strategy.

What My Build Meant to Me Today

My LEGO Clock today was a reminder that time doesn’t need to be squeezed, maximized, or outrun.

It can be partnered with.

Because when I slow my pace, even slightly:

  • I notice more

  • I think more clearly

  • I feel more grounded

  • I connect more meaningfully

  • I show up with more intention

It’s in the slowing that presence becomes possible.

And presence is what everything — and everyone — benefits from.

Today’s Reflection: What Could You Slow Down by 20%?

Not everything.
Not a whole routine.
Just one thing.

Slow it down by 20% today and notice what happens.

It might be:

  • how fast you walk

  • how quickly you respond

  • the pace of your morning

  • the speed of your breathing

  • the urgency in your schedule

  • the way you move through a conversation

  • how quickly you expect yourself to change

And then ask yourself:

What does this small shift in pace give me?

What does presence offer me as a present?

Because pacing is not about doing less — it’s about being more.

Your LEGO Build

Your LEGO Clock can represent:

  • slowing down

  • reclaiming your pace

  • partnering with time

  • choosing presence

  • grounding your nervous system

  • creating space for clarity and connection

There is no right way to build — only the way that reflects your season right now.

If you feel called to share your build or what you’re slowing down today, I’d love to see it — publicly or privately.

See you for Day 11.
