Being in the Moment: What We Can Learn from Super Bowl Athletes – A Neuroscience Perspective

Blog content

A football sails through a goal post with a rainbow visible in the sky. Trees are in the background, and the scene suggests a clear day.

As Super Bowl excitement builds, with parties being planned and speculation about Taylor Swift’s attendance swirling, there’s a deeper story unfolding – one about mental toughness and peak performance that could determine tomorrow’s champions. When Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes talks about playing “just like a fun game in high school,” he’s tapping into powerful neuroscience principles that help elite athletes perform under pressure.

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts’ mindset captures the essence of mental preparation: “I just try to be in the moment, embrace the moment, and enjoy the moment.” This approach to performance anxiety and stress management isn’t just about football—it’s about mastering our mental game in any high-pressure situation.

Let’s focus today on the fascinating neuroscience of visualization and mental practice. Research shows that mental rehearsal activates neural pathways nearly identical to those used during physical performance. When you visualize an action, your brain fires the same motor neurons as when you’re actually performing that action. This is why visualization is such a powerful tool for improving performance.

My personal journey with performance anxiety illustrates this transformation. In grade 5, I let a mean girl’s comments derail my band tryout, crushing my confidence and confirming my worst fears. Years later, at my grandparents’ 60th wedding anniversary, I sat through five cousins reading congratulatory letters, including one from the Queen of England, while anxiety consumed me. When my turn came, despite being fourth oldest among nine grandchildren, I shook and stumbled through my reading, letting nerves override my capabilities.

But these experiences led me to discover the power of mental performance coaching. Years later, when invited to speak at a Neurodiversity Awareness event about stress control, I faced my fears differently. Instead of backing out, I embraced visualization techniques, repeatedly imagining myself walking to the stage, delivering my speech, and connecting with the audience. This mental preparation helped me successfully present to 50 people in person and 450 virtually—a triumph over my previous limitations.

Ready to transform your own performance? Here’s where to start:

  1. Identify Your Challenge Start by pinpointing an area where you lack confidence. Maybe it’s public speaking, athletic performance, or leadership situations.

  2. Emotional Awareness Write down three emotions you experience when thinking about this challenge. If you identify negative emotions, consciously choose what you’d prefer to feel instead. For example, transform anxiety into excited anticipation.

  3. Choose Your Path Different approaches work for different people:

    • Meditation: Creates mental space and connects you with your inner voice

    • Visualization: Mentally rehearse successful performance

    • LEGO Serious Play: Explore obstacles and strengths through creative expression

    • Or combine these methods for a comprehensive approach

The goal isn’t just improvement—it’s transformation. Consider who you could become with just a small improvement in your performance. Equally important, reflect on what you might lose if you let stress, negative self-talk, or impostor syndrome continue to hold you back.

I went from a nervous public speaker to confidently addressing hundreds. What’s your story waiting to be transformed? Whether you’re preparing for your own “Super Bowl moment” or working to overcome daily challenges, these mental performance techniques can help you achieve your full potential.

Remember, every champion—whether in sports, business, or personal growth—started by taking that first step toward mental mastery. What area of your life is calling for transformation? The journey to becoming your best self begins with a single moment of courage and commitment to change.
